How To Tie A Mattress To A Car Roof Rack In 4 Simple Steps

Moving a mattress is hours of misery unless you know how to tie a mattress to a car roof rack. You don’t have to be an expert in transporting mattresses.

Transporting mattresses by laymen causes accidents, damage, and other unwanted things every year, and these are common occurrences. However, following a few steps and with two handy tools, you may get rid of all these occurrences. In this article, we will walk you through how to move a mattress. First, let us inform you what you need.

What You Need To Tie A Mattress To A Car Roof Rack?

You’ll need only three things to tie a mattress, namely, a thick plastic mattress bag, ratchet straps, and a helping hand. I will explain how to use these, but let’s talk about why you need these first, and why not others.

A Thick Plastic Bag

Depending on weather conditions, your pricey mattress might get ruined during transport unless it is protected. To add insult to injury, humidity or rain will get your bed wet. So, in this case, to protect it, you’ll need a thick plastic bag. Mattress bags are not expensive, and they can be found on the internet or in local stores.

For better security, you may use duct tape which is quite a handy tool for any DIY tasks.

Ratchet Straps

To save a few hundred dollars, don’t damage your car parts which will cost you thousands of dollars. Using a poly rope is not a problem in terms of securing a mattress to a car roof. The problem is though, you’re most likely to damage the rack or windows of your car while tightening the rope. Regarding this, the ratchet straps would be a great way to go.

The load capacity is 500 Lbs per ratchet with Incredible 1,500-Lb break strength. Note that, it will vary if you choose a different ratchet strap. However, a ratchet strap would be a safer option for your car, also you can reuse it while moving other things by your car roof rack. Above all, it’s easier to use than poly rope.

A Helping Hand

Apart from two important tools, you need something even more important which is a helping hand. Well, we both know how heavy a mattress might be, and you cannot move it alone. Find a friend, maybe offer him something in Starbucks, just kidding.

Now that you have got everything ready to tie a mattress to a car roof rack, let’s go through a few easy steps.

Step 1- Cover Your Mattress

You don’t want to move a damaged mattress, do you? Protect it with a mattress bag. You can wrap it up with plastic sheets but it’s a lengthy process.

On the contrary, covering with a mattress bag is not that difficult even without a helping hand. Simply place your mattress on an even surface, then slide it into the bag. You will not be able to slide it into the bag directly. Therefore, slide each side up bit by bit.

Step 2- Use Duct Tape

After covering with the bag, there might be some air left in it. The air in the bag will cause problems. To get rid of this, make sure the bag is air-free and seal it with duct tape. Once you wrapped the whole mattress tightly, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 3- Load It On The Car

Before loading the mattress on the roof, make sure you know how much load your car roof rack or car roof can hold. Not all the racks have the same capacity. Also, know the size of both the bed and car. A king-sized bed won’t fit on your narrow car roof.

Now that you are aware of both size and weight capacity, you load the mattress onto the vehicle. Place it on the center considering the left and right sides. Important to remember, don’t cover your windshield. You may need to push the mattress towards the backside, that’s okay yet you cannot cover your windshield.

Step 4- Secure The Mattress With Ratchet Straps

This is the most important step where you should be watchful. Now you have to secure your mattress so that it doesn’t fall on the road, at the same time, it remains undamaged. So, how to tie a mattress to a car roof rack?

If your mattress fits in the rack, the hardest part is done. In this case, all you need to do is, fasten the ratchet straps. Two straps should be fine, however, for extra security, you can use three. Just wrap the whole mattress and rack with these straps. Be careful, don’t tighten too much since there’s a risk of getting rack and bed damaged. To enhance security, add a Bungee Cord from the middle to the back. A car roof rack is a privilege for moving a mattress.

What If You Don’t Have A Car Roof Rack?

We are not going to ask you to buy a car roof rack! Instead of fastening the straps with a rack, you will use car windows.

  • After placing the mattress on your car, throw straps from one side to another. Remember, never throw the hooks which may cause damage to your car.
  • You can use rear windows but you cannot use front windows as you cannot open the doors. In this case, open the front doors then throw the straps and secure your bed.
  • As I mentioned earlier, don’t tighten too much.

Things To Remember While Driving With Mattress

  • Drive slowly so that the load doesn’t move. Fast driving may create pressure which will cause lifting the mattress in the air and causing an accident, especially when you take a turn. Accidents caused by this issue are common.
  • Most likely, the straps will be losing their strength at some point. Hence, stop frequently and check whether your mattress is in the same position as well as the straps. You can have your friend driving behind you so that he can observe, if possible.

I hope moving a mattress seemed troublesome to you but not anymore. The mattress transporting brands or companies may introduce you to the hardest thing to do on earth which is transporting a mattress. However, it isn’t that hard once you know how to tie a mattress to a car roof rack. Let us know how you moved your mattress.
